How to Get Rid of Puffy Eyes: Natural Treatments That Work

Don’t know how to get rid of puffy eyes? We’ve got you covered.

Nothing says Good Morning like bulging, swollen, and puffy eyes. There they are staring right at your reflection (and at everyone else looking at your face). Yay. And yes—of course, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. But no one likes looking like a bug. Plus, puffy eyes can be distracting, irritating, and are usually a sign that something else is going on.

The most common causes of puffy eyes are not enough sleep, fluid retention, stress, allergies, hormonal changes, and allergies or irritation. And yes, the occasional weekend bender (see: not enough sleep).

But regardless of what’s behind your puffy eyes, there are a few quick fixes that work on fixing any cause. And no, makeup isn’t going to help–it may actually make the situation worse!

How to Get Rid of Puffy Eyes

  1. Hydrate: If you’re not properly hydrated, your body’s going to hold onto any fluid it can, and this can mean puffy and swollen eyes. If you’re dehydrated, say from drinking too much alcohol the night before, a few glasses of water can quickly help to reduce puffiness. Especially in combination with some of our other tricks below. Try adding a squeeze of lemon or lime to boost your water’s hydrating properties.
  2. Go back to bed: It’s not always possible, but if you can get some more shuteye, that may just be what your body needs. This is especially true if your puffy eyes are the result of stress or lack of sleep or even hormonal changes, like menstrual cycle or pregnancy. Getting a bit more rest should never be underestimated!
  3. Make some tea: And don’t toss the tea bags! If your eyes are puffed up from a late night, you’ll need the caffeine in green or black tea to get you going, and those used tea bags have value too. Just pop them in the fridge for 20 minutes or so and then place them gently on your eyes. Lay back, relax, and leave them on for 15-20 minutes. Compounds in the tea help to reduce inflammation.
  4. Spoons: No tea? Chill a few spoons in the freezer or fridge and place the wells of the spoons over your eyes. Since your body heat will rapidly warm up the spoons, you may need to have a few chilling as backups. Leave on the eyes for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Cucumber slices: You’ve probably experienced this at a spa, and for good reason. Cucumbers really work! Use cold, thick slices of cucumber to tighten the skin around the eyes and reduce puffiness.

Remember, no matter what eye cream or organic serum you use (use a good one, though!), puffy eyes can strike at any time! If  your puffy eyes are accompanied by itching, watering, or other eye irritation, consult with your physician about how to get rid of puffy eyes by treating allergies.
